This is where I wish SW would just copy from ProE. With entities (or components in assy), all you do is start clicking your RMB, it cycles through whatever is in the area you hovered over. "Select Other" functionality is pretty poor in SW.
You can also hold down the lmb and drag across the lines, but don't go the entire distance of the long line.

Give a good reason why the shorter one should be selected? I can't think of one, which ever one is on top should be selected. Both Anna and Johns solutions get you to select the correct one.
Correct me if I'm wrong Ian, but I would imagine his reasoning would be that if the shorter line was always shown preference you could move to a different portion of the long line that is not overlayed with the short line when you need to select it.

It would be more intuitive. Obviously some people may prefer the "select whichever is on top," in which case if my suggestion were implemented then there should be an option in settings to revert it back.
I just think this would be a more intuitive default setting.
If it were as such, then when you select the short one it will highlight it and make it evident where it ends making it easy to select the longer one if that's what you want.
The benefit would be a faster and more intuitive way to select any line, without having to research the other options.
Yeah you can do it other ways, but this would make the software more intuitive to use.

Yes I can select it with a L-R box select but that is not always feasible in intricate drawings.

Well, I'll be darned. I guess I am used to the drawing RMB menu showing it as text I never bothered to look at the icon! Thanks Glenn!
I had to turn on my tooltips and mouse over the icons from time to time till I got used to what all of them were.
Do you know about RMB > Select Other after making a selection?
