There are a couple approaches that come to mind.
You may find that Global Variables are enough to accomplish what you need. You can also link custom properties to dimensions or other relations that you create. In the attached file I created a simple 1" x 2" x 3" block. I named each variable to match Height x Length x Width respectively. Then match your custom property to the corresponding measurements as seen below:
Naming your dimensions is not necessary, but matching your dimension's name to the field in customer properties is necessary. You could enter your basic =D1@Sketch1 expressions and get the same result.
To get area or something that needs calculation you can do more with Equations & Global Variables. There are some tutorials available on these topics (Google / YouTube). You may do well to explore those and experiment with what works well for your situations.
Thank you mike,
this is how i ended up doing it, but it takes too much time when it is a complex shape, plus it leaves some room for errors when typing the equations.
just because there is the ability to set a sensor to measure the surface area of a certain face in all configurations, i was hoping that there might be a way of capturing it and using it without having to go through setting up equations and doing the calculation.
solidworks made me very lazy apparently

do you know if it is possible to capture measurements, like a surface area of a face in the model, as a custom property to use it later in drawings or design tables...etc.
for the surface area example, it is one of the option in the drop down menu of the custom properties, but it captures the surface area of the entire model.
could this be done using sensors, can the value of a sensor be assigned to a custom property?
thanks in advance!
Sensors cannot be linked to custom properties. Vote for ER 633058 if you want to see this.
A variety of alternative methods can be found here.
i wanted to try the macro you uploded, so i installed it and it seems like that went smoothly, but i can't find area tracker as an option in the add-ins menu. (SW2015)
This is great! it worked this time. thank you very much Jim for the help.
