Can I import an .stp file fresh without external models?

So, when I imported an .stp file from another machine onto mine I had no errors, no problems with importing (save for two warnings that otherwise did nothing). And my assembly was fine. I then tried to save it as an assembly, and it generated a whole host of parts. I decided later that I wanted to get rid of the parts and start over with the original .stp file again. Now, Solidworks will not stop searching for external models and references when I load. I get a whole host of errors including that the individual part files are marked "read-only" and every single part has some kind of import error. I've searched high and low looking for some way to disable external references but Solidworks seems insistent that it isn't using any, when I know it clearly is. How can I disable external references when loading this .stp file? I'm working with Solidworks 2016 and on Windows 10, and I'm certain I'm only using default settings.
