Routing Question...

We do mostly discreet cable assemblies and some harnesses but hardly ever show them in the routed within an assembly. Do I really need the routing package or can I just figure out a good method and use basic SW modeling techniques?

If anybody has some good cable drawings they'd like to share that show me a simple cable assy (3 or so connectors), I'd love to see them.

Hi Steve,

Not sure about cable assemblies but I used to do piping without router at my previous company. Used basic SW techniques for creating fittings and pipe runs as well as hoses. We were just too small and poor to afford the routing package.

  I use the routing package. The intital setup is a little cumbersome, but I use it for all of my projects now. I am attaching some pics of what I have done.

    I guess I missunderstood the question. I thought you were trying to justify whether or not to buy the routing upgrade.

        I guess my question is (since we do piping too and will be buying the package for that particular feature set), does any one use the routing package to design/show simple three and four connector cable assemblies? I don't care to show how a 24" cable assembly is routed from one PCB to another (although it is cool, just too much time to design).

        I really don't see how that is too much time to design. When I am done I know that the harness will fit in the unit and be routed correctly. Without showing how the route looks, how do you show manufacturing to do it? Are you looking for strictly point to point drawings? If so the route package creates that.

        I heartily agree with Kirk. Designing a simple cable in 3D is pretty quick and easy as long as you use clips or virtual clips to do the routing. Place the clips in proper locations, route through them, job done, no tedious editing of splines. (That may be a slight oversimplification but it really is easy as long as you have existing geometry to mate the clips to.)
        
        If it has more than 3-4 connectors I would recommend use of a fromto list too.

        I have a requirement to route 48 cables to an ethernet switch. The cables will come through the bottom of the enclosure, through a feedthru, and then eventually land at their connection point on the ethernet switch.
        
        The problem is that the ethernet switch, in order to gain access to the inside of the enclosure, is mounted on slides. I need to account for the motion of the slide and the extra cable that will be required.
        
        My question:
        
        Is there a (simple) way to do this using only Solidworks?
        
        Will the Routing software help me with this application?

        Me personally have not done anything with moving parts. I would assume you can. So long as you constrained some points that would create the service loop needed. Basically create a clip that moved along your track and route the harness thru that clip. Assuming that you could "solve" the harness flexible instead of rigid.

        Kirk, thanks for the pictures, I really wanted to show what they would look like.
        
        I agree that it wouldn't take that much longer to do a 3D model and a fromto list is actually what should be there to describe cable length and connections.
