Luminious materials do not affect ground

Firstly, the new version runs like a dream. All the environments work fine. The 2008 files that crashed the previous versions no longer crash them, and it seems faster.
I was playing around with the lights there, and applied them to a Point of Sale I'm doing right now. I noticed that the lighting does not affect the ground plane at all. See the attached images. Here I applied a (greatly intensified) LED blue to the hidden face to mimic downlighting. The blue can be seen to wash down the vertical face, but as it hits the ground - nothing. Same in the reflective bases as well.

I know the solution to this is to model in a ground plane but this wrecks the alpha.
