reinstalling maintenance

My VAR, HawkRidge, whom I let lapse at least a year ago, called to say that in October 2008 SolidWorks will be charging $850 per year that maintenance has lapsed versus the $500 flat fee currently charged. Since I'm still using SW'06 that means updating to SW'08 will cost me $1700.

I've never used VAR services because we just don't do enough drawing and never anything very complicated.

Questions: Is this coming from SW? Can I buy anual updates from SW directly, save on VAR fees and just get answers in this forum?

Yes, this is coming from SW. No, you have to go through a VAR, SW does not sell direct.

    Not really and since you are a casual user you will have no real bargaining power as opposed to a company that has more seats of SolidWorks.
    
    You may get lucky if your VAR is running a special, which they do every now and again.
