Hi,

I'm in the process of ordering a new computer, but really could use some feedback to nail down what will work best. I'm using SWx Premium and CWx Adv Pro - 2008 SP3.1, but will be upgrading to 2009 on the new system soon after the release (cross my fingers, but I need some of the bug fixes that are going into 2009). I deal with some large assemblies and do some large analyses in CWx. I'm running into ram issues with my current 32 bit system with large analyses with many contact sets.

So I'm quite sure I want a 64 bit system to utilize more processors and RAM in CWx, but there are still a lot of descisions:

-Processor - Core 2 Quad or Xeon quad core?

Most salemen are pushing Quad core Xeon processors. From reading other posts, it sounds like there are some issues and dislikes of Xeons and Core 2 Quads are recommended. So can anyone suggest which is better:
-Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 Quad Core Processor LGA775 2.66GHZ Yorkfield 1333FSB 12MB or
-Intel Xeon E5420 Quad Core 2.50GHZ LGA771 12MB 1333FSB Harpertown Retail Processor W/ Active HSF

I'm definitely leaning toward the Core 2 quad

-Ram - DDR2, DDR3, ECC???

Most salesmen are pushing ECC, but I've heard some dislikes... I've narrowed it down to:
-Corsair XMS2 Dominator TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF 8GB 4X2GB PC2-8500 DDR2-1066 or
-Corsair XMS3 DHX TW3X4G1600C9DHX 8GB 4X2GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 or
-8GB 533MHZ DDR2 ECC FULLY BUFFERED

Definitely leaning toward the non ECC DDR3, but sounds like it is not expandable to 16Gb, which the ECC DDR2 would be with the right motherboard.

-OS - this seems to be a point of contention with 64 bit systems - I really need advice here:
-XP Pro 64 bit or
-Vista Ultimate 64 bit

Graphics - I intend to use my FX1700 GC in the new system.

MotherBoads:
-for the Core 2 quad with DDR2 I would use: ASUS P5Q Pro ATX LGA775 P45 DDR2 2PCI-E16 Crossfire 3PCI-E1 2PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN eSATA
-for the Core 2 Quad with DDR3 I would use: EVGA Nforce 790I Ultra LGA775 ATX DDR3 3PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 2PCI SATA2 RAID Sound GBLAN 1394
-for the Xeon quad core with ECC ram I'm looking at: Supermicro 7045A-WTB Intel 5400 Xeon Harpertown 2XLGA771 4U Tower 6XSATA Hotswap FBDIMM 865W PSU

If anyone has any advice or feedback on any of this hardware it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam
