Speed and settings

I ready Ricky's post about improved speed. Its hard to quantify this but is this for the lowest quality render setting?

I must admit I am finding the settings bit hard to get to grips with. I'm all for simplicity but maybe these are a bit too simple?

Main issues are:

1. Changing settings drastically changes the realtime render speed. Got from lowest to highest and the lowest is more or less instant, the highest is not far of the final render times. I find this a bit confusing. I thought these settings changed the final render quality not the realtime? Why would you want to increase the time for the realtime feedback when the main purpose of this is to allow the user to prep up for the final render?

2. Exactly what are the settings changing - anti alias levels/ray bounces/material parameters/shadowing?
