Hello!
Has anyone got an idea where those strange artifacts come from?
I know that it is difficult to tell without seeing the complete file, but maybe anyone had this before?

Indirect Lighting was set to "high", should I try "photographic"? In previous images I did, the difference between "high" and "photographic" was not noticeable.
Caustic and global illumination are at "max", both with a 0,01mm custom radius.
Strange thing. The rest of the image is nearly perfect, the artifacts ruin everything. This is just a heavily reduced part of the entire image, if I get this fixed, I'll post the whole scene, it should look great
You should really send an enhancment or bug request about this. If others start letting SW know about this issue it will get more attention. It's very frustrating to have something like this ruin a rendering and you can't solve the issue.
Wish I were more help
I assume the dot's are from the caustic photons. For a better understanding of this effects you may take a look at this website:
http://solidworks.cad.de/kh_pw2005.htm
This is a summary of new functionality of PhotoWorks 2005 I've made.
Use just one light:
Make sure other lights are turned off in Photoworks.
Increase the photon count and the energy of the light:
I used 1.000.000 C-photons, energy was set to "60".
Caustics setup:
A smaller caustic radius will cause "harder" and more detailed caustics. If the radius is too small, you will get artifacts, if the radius is too big, there will be no visible caustics.
Scene setup:
Make sure the floor is a reflective material.
Indirect Illumination:
I have the feeling, that indirect illumination does not have any effect on caustics. I may be wrong
Global shadows:
Shadows must be set to transparent.
-----------
Finally I have to say, that I'm really missing some important features in PhotoWorks. In 3DSMax (which also uses Mental Ray) there are much more options that will allow much better images.
The first image shows some nice caustics, the second one represents the maximum I got from Photoworks (4 hours rendertime):
Because of the lighting setup (most of the scene is lit by indirect illumination), there are no caustics. Pretty nice image, though :-)
I hope his will help some people

Nice images BTW.
Thanks,
The reason why there are no caustics: The light is too diffuse, also the intensity is too low. Had to do this to make the lamp nook nice
nice images & thanks for the informations about the setup.
Just a little comment: I would use less tranparency for the bottles.
