I just had an odd occurance where, without me doing anything, another instance of SolidWorks popped up and flashed through a bunch of things, then shut down. The PDM admin told me my computer must be on the list of computers used to create PDFs when saving into the vault. Really? It can't do it in the background? Can it be set up where ONLY this happens on the computer of the person initiating this action?

Yes, tasks can be configured to run on a list of computers configured with the "Task Host Configuration" tool to run tasks. Tasks can also be configured to run on the computer where the task was initiated or even on just one dedicated machine. Go to the "Administration Guide" and search for "Tasks" or "Permitting Task Execution". You can learn more about it there.
