I'm doing a die design and in detailing it I'm using a single
drawing file with multiple sheets. It's very common that the BOM is
on it's own sheet (at least in the old days). So in this example,
sheet one is the BOM, sheet two is plan of die, sheet three is plan
of punch, etc. I don't have the option to insert a BOM on sheet
one, my guess is because it will be blank except for the BOM. So I
inserted a BOM on sheet two but I can't cut and paste the BOM back
to sheet one. How can I do this? Will I need to add a "dummy" view
on sheet one outside the paper boundary to be able to create the
BOM?
Would it reduce the file size if you were to place the plan view on sheet 2 and create the BOM off sheet then copy it and paste it on sheet 1?
My thinking is that you would not need a redundant view but just a redundant BOM.
Would the copied BOM update with any changes?
I'm old school myself and usually there isn't enough room for the BOM and a clear view with it's associated ballooning.
I'm away from my desk right now so I can't try it.
If it doesn't work that way then maybe it should.
Regards,
OK but would it update on a separate sheet in the way I have suggested?
Regards,
Just something to watch out for....
Jason, I clicked on the top left corner of the BOM, right on the little arrow symbol and the BOM Manager pops up. But when I CTRL-C or use the Edit pull-down, I get a message saying it can't be copied. For what it's worth, I'm running SW 2007 sp5.0 due to customer compatiblity. Brian, I agree it seems a little redundant to put a "dummy" view on sheet one just to create a BOM and then hide the view.
Jason, I re-read your post and realized you wrote cut and paste.
Thanks.
I'm in the die design business too.... and I'm waaayyyy old shcool... I am new to Solid Works after about 18 yrs with AutoCad and a 3rd party die design package... I am designing my very first die on SW and need to do a BOM... I am having major heartburn getting what I need ... I am used to a BOM that gives me DET#, QTY, DESCRIPTION, MAT'L TYPE, PART#, FINISH SIZE, CUT SIZE.... Is there any way to get something close to this????..... are there any detailed instructions to be found on customizing or creating a custom BOM that anyone knows of???
Thanks for helping a sturggling old guy
The short summary is that each column in your bill of materials corresponds to a custom property in each of your component files. The standard template captures built-in properties for partnumber and description. You can add custom properties to your parts, including those linked to dimensions and reference those in your BOM by inserting or modifying columns.
