Control Cable Assemblies

I have not used the routing add-in (other than tutorial), and have not yet decided how to best approach this situation. What is the best method for modeling these cables (see attached) and sharing the files with other SW user that does not have the routed systems add-in?

I need the cable assembly to be referenced in the drawing BOM, and if possible, lengthen or shorten in the assembly as each lever is moved. Can a reference be added from the cable end to the hole in the lever, as the cable is part of the assembly shown in green? Because each lever moves independently, will this require separate cable assemblies in SW even though the purchased part number is the same for each cable?

I would be interested in knowing how others have solved similar problems.

The other user will be able to access the routing files. But if he does any changes to them, not quite sure what will happen then. As long as the cable assembly is built in the assembly the BOM is pulling from, it will populate in the BOM.

Yes you will need to create the individual cables since they are being adjustable individually. It is similar to when I use the Standard Cables option and create multiple parts of the same part, but in different orientations. Just access each cable assembly after building them and add the same part number and title to it. Then in the BOM join those rows together. I am assuming you can make them adjustable, I just haven't done it, so not quite sure what would be needed.

I am considering moving the control cables to the top level assembly, and not using the routing as my client does not have the SW Routing add-in. I have added this posting to the Movable Control Cable under the Assemblies forum in hopes of receiving other non-routing suggestions.

I think your suggestion is a good one. However, I do not know if routing is the best approach for this particular situation.

Update: Below are the suggested techniques from the Assemblies Category that I am interested in pursuing to solve this problem:

I've done something similar with in context sweeps - a 3d splin connects the endpoints of the assembly, and a sweep makes the connection between the end terminals, when the terminals move, the sweep updates.

The problem is the sweep is not very robust - it is easy to move the endpoints to a position where the sweep becomes invalid - so contraining the spline points may help - I never tried

Chris, I just saw a Tip & Trick by Phil Sluder which did what you're looking for, sort of. His cable assy was an in-context cable that would move when he moved the cable ties, since the sketch for the cable was positioned throught them. I believe that this was all in-context which would make it difficult to move the cable in different assemblies without creating several new part files.

You can get a hold of Phil through the San Diego User Group or just scream real loud, I think he comes here often.

Update: Added pictures of solution to link in the Assembly catagory. Except for creating Cpoints (connection points) in the cable assembly and mouting holes in the lever-arm, the routing add-in was not used.
