Custom Properties - PartNo

We have just upgraded to 2008 (from 2006) and the PartNo field does not act the same. We use the Custom properties in the part/assembly file to transfer information to the drawing and the BOM (Excel based). As we started creating BOMs we noticed that the PartNo is the file name not the Custom Property PartNo? Before I go and change my VB app to use something other than PartNo is there a way to change this so I can continue to use the PartNo field?

I don't remember ever using "PartNo" as a property, but we've used $PARTNUMBER for years and it works perfectly to transfer discrete part numbers to a BOM.

This is the property that's linked to the field "Part number displayed when used in a bill of materials" in the configuration manager, set to "user specified name".
