I am making a document that will use images with different aspects - some landscape, some portrait. I want to be able to update them all using Multiple mode in the Hi-res Image Workshop, but it looks like it will just use the standard paper space for all images.
Can I set the paper space to be different for each view so that they will all update in a batch but each will have the correct aspect?
Or maybe there's a better approach to achieve this...

Since your paper space controls the whole document I don't believe you're going to get this to work the way you describe it. While you can save views that utilize different paper space you would have to change your document paper space to match before exporting said view. For instance if I set my paper space to 11 x 17 and save View 1, then switch to 8-1/2 x 11 and save View 2, in the view thumbnail you will see the difference but I would have to switch the overall paper space in the document for each view before exporting. The same would go for portrait and landscape. I am using 2014 still so this may have changed in recent updates.

A primary reason for trying out Composer is that one can re-create all the images (linked to a Word doc) as a batch whenever the design changes. This would be a huge time-saver. However, it seems that this is only possible if all images in the document are the same size and aspect. I hope this is not truly a limitation, because that would destroy at least 1/2 of the value of the product for us.
Is there any known way to create views with different aspects, yet still be able to create/re-create their images as a batch using Multiple mode?

You can resize and crop images in word the way you want. They will keep these changes inside the word document after the links are updated to new version of image from composer. So you don't have to change the size for each image in composer, just batch them all out and modify the size in word.
However it would be a nice enhancement to set different paper spaces for selections of views in Composer. Maybe you should add this enhancement request to SolidWorks through the Customer Portal?

I'll do some testing to verify that this works as you say. If I can format the images as I want and still do the batch update, that would be a winning workflow.

I have to agree with Sindre that cropping in word may be your best option at this time. I normally don't care too much about image export size in Composer since it only creates my image then I use InDesign for publishing purposes. Now when you are using hi-resolution its better to have a larger image then you need when resizing to avoid image loss trying to enlarge later so paper space is important but could always be set to larger than needed to accommodate all your images in a certain file. I don't use Word for publishing but if you can set image size within Word then when it updates you should get the same size and aspect as originally set before updating image.
