Hello,

I am already familiar with creating reference planes using 3 distinct points; however, I was hoping somehow Solidworks has the ability to create a reference plane based off of more than 3 points. Essentially, I want to create a plane of best-fit through as many points as possible to ensure an accurate reference plane. If absolutely necessary, I can calculate the equation for the plane of best-fit outside of Solidworks; however, I would still need a way to define a plane via an equation.

I look forward to your response.

Thank you,

Daniel

If you can find an equation for such a thing then there should be a way to put it into SWX. However, I suspect that would involve dumping all the points into a spreadsheet. Perhaps there is already an Excel function that can do this (probably in the Statistics module that comes with Excel, but is not loaded by default). Once you have the mathematical definition of the best-fit plane then it should be a simple matter to solve for the coordinates of three points on the plane to use for the SWX definition.

If you can do this in a spreadsheet then you might setup a Design Table, even if it is for just one configuration. In this way you can tap the ease and power of Excel and have it reside within your SWX file.
