Purchasing a new computer for solidworks. I'm looking at getting the new i7 processor with 10 cores and 20 threads per core. I was wondering if Solidworks 2015 would take advantage of the multi-threading? I know multi-cores will help but wndering if the threading with give me more performance. Everything I read shows SW is still a single instruction set software.
If it is just SOLIDWORKS then that would be real overkill. Generally the fastest quad core cpu you can get is the best balance. Some tasks are multi threaded but as most features have to be built in order one after another multi core use is limited. Drawings with many views will use multiple cores to rebuild the views but mainly the benefit is for photview 360 and simulation (the new Visualize product benefits more from mid to high end quadro gfx) even for simulation resulta vary between types and solvers and tend to diminish after 6-8 cores for a single study.
Over-kill for just SolidWorks. You are better off with a high clock speed quad core system with SSD drives and a good amount of fast RAM.
..I'm sure it will help.. where you're going to see the diff mainly is in rendering/fea..
..personally, for the grand scope of processing, get the fastest SSD and memory you can afford!
