Does anyone know what the difference is?

I am trying to render using someone elses materials. I notice that there are two of the same type of paint. One has a checkerboard background, the other does not. (see attached "maroon powder coat - test" and "maroon powder coat")

I know I have more control over the test file, but I am curious as to what is the difference? Which should be the better one to use? If I wanted to create my own files is there two different ways to go about it?

Thanks for any knowledge.
Misty
