Setting up PDMworks

Hi everybody
I am using sw2008
I am new to this and I would like to set up pdmworks on my computer not on a server. The reason I want it is because of revisions. I do not know how to install the vault i have pdmworks installed on my computer cause it comes with solidworks but i tried entering in my computer name and it won't except so I figure there is a specail set up option for the vault before you can start using it.
I checked the help file and there is a lot of help there but i could not find any for setting this up. So if any body can help me with this I would really apreciate it thanks in advance.

I think the issue is that he needs to install a server (vault) on his local machine.
Check on your local machine to see if you have a vault installed (C:\VaultData).
My guess is that you do not. So, you need to locate the pdmserver/setup.exe
If you browse the CD there should be a folder named pdmwserver. Browse into the directory and double click on the setup.exe to install the server. IMPORTANT: Make sure you install the version of the server which matches your client.

Try entering the server name as "localhost" (omit the quotes). That is the default name for the vault computer, if you are accessing it from the same computer.

    Thanks a lot for your reply guys!The reason it did not work was because the vault was not installed so i installed it and now it works good npw i just have to figure out how to use the program. So thanks again.

      Is your computer with the vault installed backed up on a nightly/regular basis?
      
      Having the vault on a computer without a solid back-up plan is playing with fire.
      
      If this is just for personal use and the loss of data will not cause you any issues then go for it.
      
      If this is for any type of business that depends on these files not getting lost from a system crash or corruption, you need to get a good plan together for handling your data backups.

        It is for work and all the computers in the office get backed up every so because of that i thiunk we are good but why is it so dangeious to be useing the vault, or why could i loose my files easier than if i was not using the vault. Thanks

        Using the vault is not a problem. Having no file back-ups in place is a problem. Sounds like you have that base covered with back-ups.
        
        There are companies out there that do not have a good system in place for regular back-ups of the company data. Kinda scary to think what would happen if one lost a critical computer with all the company data on it. That is why I asked the question.... :-)

        Ben, even if your PC's are backed up from the network you need to setup a scheduled task to stop the vault service during the backups and restart the vault service afterwards.

      How do I install the Vault? It says in the help menu to load pdmwserver.exe but I got SW 09 from the web rather than from a cd and I can't find that file. I can use SW explorer all day long but I'm having problems logging in. HELP!!

        Go to Customer Portal
        Downloads and Updates
        Click on the SolidWorks Tab and select the SP and OS your are using.
        Accept Agreement
        On the bottom of the next page look for "If the Installation Manager Assisted Manual downloads fail, you can individually downlonload, unzip, and install all the files (not recommended).
        Select the SP you are upgrading from, language, and Solidworks Pro.
        Under step 5 optional update find Soldiworks Workgroup PDM server. It's almost 450MB.
        Install that.

Hi Guys,

I have a similar problem although I have the C:\vaultdata on my local machine and when I try to log on with the defaults I get a error saying cannot log on to vault computer? Any ideas? Should I run the server setup again?

Any help would be great

  make sure vault ports are not blocked by your firewall. see pdmw help on vault ports.
