Has anyone succeeded in shring bom data with access?

Solidworks exposes the file references through the document manager API and that's freely distributable. You'd have have some API skills to leverage that.
there's some commercially available software to communicate a BOM to an ERP system or manage it from outisde of Solidworks. Maximo comes to mind. You might also look into DriveWorks or another configurator. They're designed to work in the other direction: create a solidworks assembly tree from a database, but some may be able to push in both directions.
In terms of what you can do for little effort and money, you can export a BOM to a seperate Excel file and then either import or link that file to an Access database. There's no associativity in this approach, however.
