How do I import a decal at the correct size?

Maybe I'm just not formatting my image correctly, but is there any way to bring in a "decal" at the actual size? I know it's all good and great to be able to resize the image, but I just want to bring in a decal at it's real world size and put it on the model. For some reason it's taking my 5" decal and blowing it up to fill the whole 47" wide face of my assembly. Any help?

Or would it just be easier for me to bring in a "picture" and place it in the assembly?

This is something we will be doing a lot in the future so I don't want to resize every time I bring in the decal.

Ok thank you, that's ultimately what I was trying to find out.

All I was asking with the DPI question was if there was a way to cheat it to being full size. I know some programs will bring in images at a specific dpi, say 72, and if your image is sized correctly at that resolution it will come in full size.

I believe a decal will automatically try and fit the image to the entire face or object you have chosen to apply it to. Just go to the mapping tab and type in the exact size it should be in the appropriate vertical or horizontal direction.

The other thing you could try, though I don't know if PW cares, is to check the size of the image in a photo editor and make sure the DPI setting is correct for the actual size of the decal you want. If the decal is supposed to be 5" wide, make sure the DPI is set at 100.

So there's no magical button that makes it not do that? bummer. Do we know what PW renders the object by default? 100 dpi, 300dpi?

No, there is no magical button; not even if you specifically save the Decal through PW for reuse. I believe you always have to scale it.

I'm not sure I understand your question about PW and DPI. The choice of how big in pixels to make your rendering is totally up to you and depends on what the rendering is to be used for. If you are going to print the rendering then you want at the least a 100 dpi image. So if the final print is to be 10" wide, then make your rendering 1000 pixels wide; if making a poster and it needs to be 30" wide then render 3000 pixels wide. I generaly like to print at between 150 to 200 dpi for images. As a rule I will render images as large as time will allow as you can always shrink a rendering for say a power point presentation, but you certainly cannot blow up a low res image for a big print.

Building on Mark's comments about Decals fitting to the face, a common method before we greatly improved (uh... fixed) the decal editor in 2005 was for designers to 1) use split curve and split the face with a rectangle, dimensioned exactly where you wanted the decal to go. 2) highlight the face and take a screen shot orthogonal (Normal to) to the split face. 3) in your photo editor of choice paste the screen image and crop your image to the highlight of the split face. Now compose your artwork within this size and save. 4) in PW, import your artwork and use the Fit width and height selection. You will see it fit perfectly. The advantage of this is that you have real geometry at the edge to measure to and layout in a drawing.
