I am debating on whether to finally install SW2008 here at
work. As of now I am on SW07 sp5, and things are going as well as
are to be expected (occasional virtual function call errors, random
crashes and lock ups). It seems that the first sp's are out for 08,
but the comments that I have read don't really give me a clear
picture of whether I want to jump in or not...
Should the lack of a "showstopper" problem indicate for me to go ahead? Or are may users holding out as I am?
Are there any major issues to be aware of?
Why isn't there a Solidworks main program specific forum, like the add-ins so people can ask targeted questions?

I would still wait on 2008 as it is panning out to be Solidwork's "Windows ME"
I find virtual components pretty cool.
I think I understand the hardware requirements part though... but isn't that always the case with any major release of software. So I should be ok with XP sp2 and SW08? Correct?
It a large assemebly drawing model ,its take more than 5 mins just to turn on/off a layer.
I would recommend that you install 2008 as a separate installation, then work with a sample copy of your production files to be able to test functionality with the new version of SolidWorks. We tried this in house with good success. We did run into an error (that has since been fixed in SP 2.0) of our equations having trouble making the conversion. That is any files that had equations in 2007 when they were opened in 2008, there were a few 'compiling' errors in the equation, that is the equations would fail. While this error happened in both 32 and 64 bit systems, it appeared to be more problematic in the 64 bit systems. Most of the files just took repointing the related dimension for it to correct itself. As i mentioned above, it does appear that this issue has been resolved in the latest service pack. Other than that, I say cautiously, go for it! All the best,
Rhett
Go for it.
Traditionally, I've been the one who "as soon as the box hit the desk" the software was installed. Like a kid ripping into a present...
With 08, for the first time in 11 years, I held off for about 2 or 3 weeks after hearing so many initial remarks.
Once that blather died down I went for it.
Results?
Yes it is different.
Within a few days productivity was pretty much back up to spec.
So far....So far -I have not had any "major" glitches...
I have to admit, I belong to quite a few forums covering various topics. Not one is half as responsive as this one.
If problems arise you've got all the folks here that really know there stuff by using it every day...As well as your VAR.
(And allot of the folks here are friendly!) -imagine that...
On a side note: do you belong to a forum where the topics cover off road adventure on 2 wheels? That avatar looks familiar...?
You are right on the speed of reponse with the SW forums. But enthusiast forums do tend that direction, and yes most contibutors are friendly. That is until you contradict their passionately held beliefs on whatever subject is dearest to them (PC vs Mac anyone?)
Though I am a member of many forums?, fori?, lets just use message boards, I cannot claim membership in any that are in the realm of motorcycles. However it sounds like someone out there has incredible taste in avatars. I chose this one because of my off kilter sense of humor. I still find it funny every time I look at it. I am working on a new one, but I am having difficulty finding time to model an eagle for the remainder of the badge. This was a PW rendering of my WIP. Most of my forum memberships are under this username.

1) Stability: No better or worse than 2007SP4.0.
2) File Conversion: I've had no issues.
3) Interface: Different? Yes. Better than wrestling with 7 different toolbars all the time? Absolutely.
Also, I keep discovering new features that make me say "That's a good idea!", like context menu pop-ups on click, the way inserting new parts into an assembly works, the ability to mirror section profiles when working with weldments.
Solidworks Search and file dissection would be awesome if 64-bit desktop search could access network drives, but this is Microsoft's shortcoming, not SW's.
