Anna, I'm talking about the program that displays fasteners
i.e screws, dowels etc. Why is this so hard to translate between
users?
If it was inside the program it would not be a problem. Correct?
Because Toolbox was never set up or implemented very well
when SolidWorks incorporated it, after buying it from CimLogic way
back in 2001/2002.
The interface for modifying/creating custom databases looks exactly
the same as what we have with our old CimLogic package that we use
with AutoCAD 2000i.
I am pretty sure in SolidWorks, even today, it works the same as
what was originally developed by CimLogic way back when.
It is great if you are a single user that doesn't send any files to
anyone. But it is totally set-up wrong for use in a multi-user,
network environment when first installing. Most people do not
discover this until after a lot of heartache.
This is the reason we do not and never have or will use Toolbox
unless it is re-written. We have our own library of hardware that
we use. No hassles, heartache or grey hair from our fastener
library.
I expect Matt will weigh in on this one as well. He has written
many a word on the problems with Toolbox. It is to bad that such a
powerful concept just is not implemented or documented well enough
to keep users out of trouble.
Anna,
At work we have it set up on the network. This creates it's own
unique problems such as a warning that another user is using it and
try again later.
At home when I open a document from work of course nothing from
toolbox translates to scale.
Then there's the vendor problems. From what I'm reading it looks
like I'm
screwed until Toolbox grows up and learns to recognize
itself and load from any computer.
For collaboration between different companies, how can I sent
my assembly (pack & go) to another company, and have them open
the assembly using their tool box to modify the fasteners in the
assembly?
If a hole size needs to change, and the assembly is sent back to
me, I will need to open the assembly with the correct toolbox
fastener (previously updated at another company) using my toolbox.
Does a technique or setting exist to make this possible?
I seem to remember the SW 2007 Bible stating this was possible. Has
anyone found a way to share assemblies with toolbox fasteners
between different companies?
It was my understanding that in SW2007, Toolbox would be able to
generate missing fastener configurations when someone with a
different toolbox install opened up your files.
This is not working for you guys????
Wish I had more experience with Toolbox to help you. I am sure some
of the other peeps will chime in soon.
Anna,
No it's not working.
I think when I upgraded from 2008 sp2.0ev to sp2.0 I must have
overwritten my toolbox for 2007 sp5.
Now when I open a 2007 file I get the future version box on all
previously loaded toolbox parts.
When I open the same assembly in 2008 sp2.0 I get monster toolbox
parts.
Anyway I'm tired of the grief Toolbox is giving me. In the future
I will create a new part and 'save as' in the assembly. It will
increase the file size but I will put in one of each and edit the
BOM manually.
Regards,
EDIT: OK I got the toolbox working. It does replace the missing
parts now in 2007. When I open the 2007 saved file in 2008 they
translate also. My Bad. I used the Copy Settings Wizard from my
networked desktop to my laptop and things got messed up from there.
I,m happy enough now to dare to continue using Toolbox.
We don't use Toolbox. Can you give a bit more detail on what you are talking about. It will be helpful to my education about SW.
Cheers,
