Solidworks taking over my workstation

Hi all,
I'm new to the forums but not to solidworks, been using it since SW97+. Recently Solidworks has adopted a nasty habit of taking over my workstation by running the CPU nearly to 100%, with the solidworks.exe process using between 70-85% percent of the CPU. This happens even when swx is idle (i.e. i'm not actively using the application, it's just open with a model open) and it doesn't matter what size file I'm working with. Right now I have it open with a single part and one drawing and it's using tons of CPU cycles.

This happens apparently at random, sometimes it works as it should, sometimes it takes over as i've described. This is extremely difficult to work with as it brings every other application I have running to a crawl, including email, PDM database client, etc.

Anyone seen this? Anyone have any ideas?

Hardware:
Dell Precision 380
P4 3.2 Ghz
Quadro FX3450
4Gb Ram
Win XP Pro/3Gb switch.

Thanks in advance.
