SW initial startup

Has anyone seen problems with a slow initial startup of SW 2007 after a roboot?
Ever since I upgraded to sp4.0, every time I reboot my machine and launch SW it takes anywhere between 2min and 5+ minutes to open. I've ruled out my old computer since I just got a new computer and loaded sp5 and it does the same thing but somewhat shorter @ 2 minutes. After the initial startup, if I close out SW and reopen it's ok.

Can you give complete system spec's on your computers, both old and new?

Are you using SW, SW Office, SW Premium?

Are you on a stand alone license or a network license?

Are you just launching SolidWorks or are you launching SolidWorks and also opening up files at the same time?

Are you using PDMWorks or any other add-ins on start-up? How long does it take to launch SW if you turn off all your add-ins?

The devil is in the details and we need a bit more detail to be able to help you.... :-)

Most all computers programs will launch quicker after they have been loaded into memory the first time. They are still resident in an area of the systems memory to be able to be quickly fetched and processed by the CPU.

  New computer-
  Dell Optiplex GX755 - 2.66ghz Core 2 Duo
  Windows XP Professional x64 - SP2
  8gb Memory
  512mb ATI FireGL V5600
  SW 2007 SP5
  
  Standalone license, all add-ins (including PDMworks) on startup and I typically launch SW 1st and and then open any required files.
  
  Does Solidworks go out and validate a license upon each startup or initial session? SP4 is where they changed how they handle license activation and I never had this issue prior to SP4.

    Do you need all your add-ins on all the time? Typically if the add-in is not needed it is turned off. No need to be having resources consumed by your add-ins when they are not being used.
    
    Do me a favor and turn off all your add-ins and then restart your computer and tell us how long it takes to open SW. I am thinking there is an add-in or two that is causing your delay. You may be able to narrow down the offender if it is an add-in that is causing the delay.
    
    For us we so no difference in opening SW 2007 between any of the SP. But we do not open SW with all its add-ins.

      Are you located in the States?
      
      How are you able to spec a Dell Optiplex system with XP 64 bit, 8 gigs of RAM and an ATI FireGL card? Those options are typically found on a high performance workstation Dell Precision system, not the Dell Optiplex general office systems.
      
      Or is the Dell Optiplex brand sold/spec'ed as a high performance workstation class system in other parts of the world?

Yes, I've seen both 2007 and 2008 take forever to boot.

I have never had a problem booting SW 2007 or SW 2008. I would have to agree with Anna on this one to turn off all of your add-ins and then see how quickly it reboots. Let us know what you find out.

The first application of Solidworks takes about 11 seconds to load. The other instances I open take about 4 seconds, including the time to click the stupid ok button.

  Ok, I got the stopwatch and timed both systems with the add-ins checked and unchecked.
  
  My new systems is faster on the startup but it should not take 2+ minutes to load.
  
  I typically keep FeatureWorks, PDMworks, Toolbox, Toolbox Browser and Utilities check for startup.
  
  The add-ins made no difference on startup for the old system (2007 sp4) with the average time between 5-6 minutes both checked and unchecked.
  
  The new system (2007x64 SP5) averaged around 2-1/2 minutes with the add-ins checked and about 2 minutes unchecked.
  
  Yes, I'm located in Pa and I've been running SW for 7+ years. We tried to find a system that would work with various groups and had the best value for peformance. I was just happy to receive a new system and finally run SWx64.

    We have 3 licenses of 2008 installed at work and I have mine also on my laptop at home. All 4 installations are very slow on the initial SW startup. I will admit that it seemed slow in 2007 too, but this is longer in 2008.

    sw2008 sp1.1 opens the first time at around 1 min 10 secs. After that, it opens in about 30secs.
    
    This is on:
    Dell Precision 390
    Intel 6300 @ 1.86ghz Dual Core
    4gb memory
    Quadro Fx 3500 Graphics
    7200rpm 80gb hard drive
    Winxp sp2 32bit
    
    Certainly not the speediest machine out there. I would think that cpu speed, memory and hard drive speed would affect loading of applications. Its all about how fast it can load the data into memory from the hard drive.
    
    As some have mentioned, anti virus software could be the culprit. Try disabling it and reboot, then launch Solidworks and see how it does. You may also try disconnecting from you network and see if there is a potential problem there.

      Various 32bit apps can cause SW to "hang" on initial load under XP-64. PCAudit and Scype are a couple of examples.
      
      Take a look at your startup file and see if something else could be causing the problem.

Some programs (like anti-virus, anti-spyware, Java, etc) have options to be updated at every boot-up, so either allow them to fully update before attempting to start SW, or set the option to not update. Some programs are also often set to run system scans upon start-up.

Try disabling Windows Desktop Search. I've found that to be the worst performance crippler for SW.

  I've seen this ever since I started using SWX back in '01. It's not new. Try opening adobe acrobat viewer it behaves the same way in my experiance.

I do not know what to say, I can honestly say that I do not have this problem. I will say it takes longer than opening say Microsoft Outlook or Word but not long enough to make me question it. Sorry I couldn't help you out.

There are some apps/utilities here which may help to see what processes are running when SW is started.

Process Explorer, Process Monitor and RegMon would be my first choices.

  If you weren't running the 64 bit version, I'd actually recommend moving to Vista in your case. It has a memory management feature called Superfetch, and once it sees that you run SW a lot, it would automatically load it into memory, before you even start the program.
  
  Make sure your computer has finished with all the other start up tasks it tries to accomplish (like loading your anti-virus) before you fire up SW. There's a LOT of hard drive grinding during this period to begin with, and throwing a bohemoth program like SW into the mix at the same time will be painful.
  
  Also, you may want to look into your computer's indexing options. Recent versions of SW install Windows Desktop Search and depending on how it's set up, it can be a major performance drag. Specifically, go to Tools -> Options -> System Options tab -> Search. Make sure "Indexing Performance" is set to "Index only when computer is idle" Also go to indexing options in control panel, and make sure its not indexing anything crazy, like your entire c:\ drive.
