I have 2 parts both mated to a plane by limit distance mates. Is it possible that when i move one part away from the plane the other part moves itself the same distance away?
Create a symmetry mate relation. No need for variables
Do you want them to move in the same direction? If yes, I'd think you should be able to place mates between these two parts to do that.
I would like them to move opposite directions, the plane is between them.
Take a look at this simple example. I controlled one using a limit distance mate and controller the other based on a global variable that is driven by the first component.
You got me curious, so I did a little experimenting, although it didn't involve a limit mate. I created a sketch on the front plane in my assembly, with a horizontal construction line centered on my origin, but didn't dimension it. I then closed the sketch and mated two parts to the ends of the line. With Instant 3d on, I could drag one end of the line right or left. Because of the midpoint relation, of course the other end moved with it. As soon as I released the endpoint of the line the parts' positions updated. Will that work for you?
If they are going in opposing directions you could create a variable that controls them.

Good one, Arthur. Having a mirror pattern would also work in some situations.
The symmetric mate is not allowing me to select my plane as the symmetry plane.
You need to select a plane that is external from both of your parts for what you're trying to do.
I've done this before and had it work in 2015.
If my parts are in an assembly and i draw a plane in the assembly, separate from the parts, it still doesn't allow me to select my drawn plane as the symmetry plane.
I created a simple assembly using the Right Plane in a Symmetry mate. Maybe looking at it will help you figure it out.
I did the same with the front plane in an attempt to figure it out. It worked great, but my parts aren't in the proper place to use any of the origin planes in my original assembly.
After digging down many layers of assemblies to original part i moved it to put the right plane in the correct place. It works perfectly. Thank you everyone for your helpful suggestions
