In SP3, no matter if I make features visible or invisible, icons and text look exactly the same. Sketches work however. This BUG appears in both Blue and Classic Icon sets.

"Same behavior in SW14 SP3. Hasn't it always been the case that the icons don't change for visible / hidden features at the part level?" - Dave, I'm pretty sure it has always been that way.
"You could try suppressing it instead of hiding it? not sure if that would achieve what you're trying to get?" - Harry, in some cases that might work, but it also would cause child features, if any, to become suppressed and that may not be wanted.
The way to be able to tell at the part level is to show your "Solid Bodies" and "Surface Bodies" folders.
This will let you know what is hidden and what is not. See the screen shots below (this is from 2015, not really sure how it affects 2016, but I didn't see anything that would change it in the what's new):
You can see that it shows hidden.
Hiding any feature in the tree that is part of a body hides the whole body.
It has always been like this. You can hide sketches, planes, bodies, surfaces..... You can suppress features. There is no hiding them.
