I'm not sure what it is you are selecting to get that error. Try selecting "Sketch2" and Ctrl select "Plane3" in the feature tree then "Insert Derived Sketch". Works for me.
Edit:... Ooops. I had the wrong plane on my original attachment.
Unlike your screenshot, I don't see any derived sketch in the file you attached, and I'm still getting the same error from some reason.
Are you saying you don't have a "Sketch4 derived" at the bottom of the tree? I opened the zip file I attached and it is there.
You're right, I opened my old file by mistake, but take a look...I made a youtube clip of the error I get (and I do click on Ctrl before clicking the plane)
I do not use derived sketches much, but I did not get your error when I tried. However, after watching your video, I notice that you are selecting the sketch out of the graphics window and I was selecting it from the feature manager tree. When I select from the graphics window, I get the same error you are. Try selecting from the feature manager tree and see if you get the error then.
Thanks Solid Air, choosing from the tree manager did the trick I'm using SW 2014 for the record. Much appreciated!
You did not state what version of SW you are using. I originally opened it in SW2014. I just opened it in SW2016 and get the same result. According to SW Help, I am supposed to select a face. When I select a face, no error message. I will have to do more research.
This issue was supposedly fixed in a previous version of SolidWorks (apparently not when selecting planes if the error is still an error in SW2016). I suggest contacting your VAR and in the meantime select the sketch from feature manager tree.
