Is there a way to use "Normal to" once you have started a sketch?
I have noticed if i go to use the quick select in the right click menu there is no normal to button. Is it not an active feature once you have started a sketch?
Hi Nathan, yes there is an option called "auto-rotate" view normal to plane on sketch creation. See the screenshot below:
When this is turned, SolidWorks will automatically rotate your sketch plane normal to the screen every time you start a sketch.
Hope this helps
Thank you, This solves my issue.I was pretty sure this was an option somewhere but didn't recall where it was located
Must be an old Pro/E guy. Yes, I miss having that feature, too.
Are you wanting to be Normal when you start the sketch or Normal when you edit the sketch?
The normal way is to select the "Normal To" icon when you start a sketch. I'm in SW2015 and I believe it might be updated now in SW2016 to have such a feature to allow one to be "Normal To" whenever they edit a sketch.
...and look at that. Another user has chimed in with the correct answer and even showed me that it does, in fact, exist in SW2015, too.
As Prasad showed, you can have your model go to "Normal to" automatically when you start a new sketch. It's a great feature, but if I understood the OP correctly, he's asking about going to "Normal to" in an active sketch, after it's started. And yes, there is a way. It's in the View Orientation drop-down. I'm pretty sure it's in the heads-up display by default, but it's been so long since I customized mine that I'm not sure. (As you can see, I've added individual orientation icons to my display, including that one.)
You can set up a short key as well.
This work pretty well for me.
or you could press CTRL+8 which is normal to (short cut:) )
I nominate 'Spacebar' Hotkey to bring up the temporary orientation toolbar and select 'Normal to'
Fun fact: the spacebar is being 'typed' 100,000's times per second around the world
