Using the Combine feature to make a negative

Hi I am trying to make a ring by creating the negative space first and then using the combine feature to "subtract" the bodies from each other.

I am trying to use the same technique from a similar post here: How to create a part from a void or negative space?

The combine feature isn't working for me and I can't quite get it to work. Any help is appreciated!
