How many people are using classic icon colors? What else do you like in it?
I noticed that the classic colors mostly only show up in part files and not as much in assemblies and drawings.
What are your thoughts?
well, it is a "EV" release,.. so, for the EV, the classic look is clearly "unfinished"...
so, I guess we will have to wait............................................ and see?
oh,.. I am still generally annoyed with the FATTER small icons boxes.. example attached,.. yes, I understand the touch screen w/ different screen size genre so I can design on my phone ....? but, I DON'T see the rational for these FAT icon boxes for the REAL users working on a Desktop??...
My example shows how weird this whole icon make over has become.... how the heck can the user see the new warning save icon?
Look at the small top row 2012/2014/2015 and 2016... these are 1:1 on a 1920x1200 display...
(and, the larger 1200% blown up icons are for this post to see how FAT the box is now) so, is this the new kindergarten cad?.. oh btw... for you that may not know.. that is a 3 1/2" floppy disc (1983-1998?) behind the !.
I like the changes I've seen so far.
I think it wold be nice to have more control over the size, and color of the icons. I can't imagine anyone using SW on a phone or tablet (can we say crash??) it barely works on a laptop.
Why don't the icons have a foreground color and a background color and people can pick what they like, maybe some presets like classic and the new winter's day whiteout (if you have ever been skiing or snowmobiling when its overcast you know what I mean) themes, and maybe some others that look good.
What I really want is good contrast between my background and my icons. I really hate the fuzzy line/drop shadow between them. but it is required when the colors have low contrast.
Without a doubt the BEST improvement yet, glad to see the classic colours back in the desktop icons, for a while I thought no one was listening to peoples request for the old classic theme. Well done!
It's only a marginal improvement at best and that's being generous. They added the "classic" theme back in but when you actually switch over to it they only reverted back about 1/3 of the icons to the "classic" colors.
It was a waste of time to change only a select few and now it's a mish-mash of "classic" and the think-tank derived blue/grey icons.
They did listen like many big companies do....they say "yeah we hear you loud and clear"; and they roll out something that shows they didn't really listen at all.
They should have "classic" icons that match as they were before 2016 or the blue/grey option with no mixing of the two. That would have eliminated 99.9% of everyone's icon issue with 2016.
So far - about 3 days into SP3 and the first time on 2016, - first day ok - yesterday not as good and today it's being a big pain. I am working on the same assemblies, doing the same thing and it keeps hanging up and then crashing. I wasn't used to crashes, 2015 was pretty good after SP4.
Today I actually restored a folder so I can work with 2015 again, got the job done fairly quick, but in 2016 it kept hanging.
Changing colors on the Icons are one thing, but why change the design, I keep editing the original sketch rather than starting a new one, (the 2016 editing a sketch icon is similar to the new sketch icon in previous versions), plus there are a few more I need to get used to..........
They should have left the icons the way they were. It is very difficult to see what you are doing now. The old colors were very helpful.
The problem is that they have to do things like changing the icons (both color and design) in order to justify the upgrade. UI changes, and other features like that are "sexy". Plus you can't use "This version doesn't crash as much as the last one" as a sales pitch. Unfortunately, stability is what we really need, not new colors or icons.
Does anyone know when or if they will bring back the colors to the 2015 version. I am hesitant to install 2016 company wide for fear that it will slow everyone down. Sticking with 2015 v5 for now.
When SWX said they were going to fix the icons, they never said that they would only fix a few of them. Nor was there any statements that the rest of the icons would be fixed in a later SP. They have been rather tight-lipped about this. This isn't really helping. Users want to know (and have a right to know) if SWX is actually going to fix the problem satisfactorily, or keep jerking us around.
At this point, I no longer have a stake in it, since I'm changing jobs and won't be working on SWX anymore. However, the actions taken by DSS/SWX have been rather disdainful of the SWX user community. Needless to say, I'm not very impressed.
I am under the impression that they only reverted some of the icons in an effort to release the early version. I hope they will carry that through to the rest of the icons.
The more I've used the new color scheme the more I hate it. It is really hard to see some things. It is especially hard to see which icon is selected in some lists. view>hide/show list is pretty hard to tell whether an option is selected or deselected. And items that are grayed out are very hard to tell from items that are not grayed out especially if the list is all grayed out. you can't tell that none of the options are available.
I hope that SW engineers and programmers will accept that those of us who are not color blind also need to see the icons and options and that we can't spend our precious moments trying to decipher icons because they are hard to read.
I think that since they made them vector based they should make the colors map-able so we can just select our own color scheme. That would make the color blind people and the rest of us able to choose colors that are most discernible and easy to read.
They would need to specify a foreground and background color variable in 6-10 different categories. that can't be that difficult.
Good luck in your new job!
FYI - there was a disclaimer explaining that the icons/colors may well be a work in progress with not all of the final changes in place for SP 3.
..yeah... nice cya.
.....BUT.. does it really take this LLLLLLLOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGG to update icons?
....things that make you say,.... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
They'll probably have them all fixed by SP 05.
Then bugger them up again in SWX 2017.
I loaded it up last night and briefly opened a part file. Looked the same as before. Will have to track down the classic button tonight to get the icon colors back I guess. There are other things that concern me though, the menus are much worse as well. I'm having to click 2-3-4 more times for most commands that used to be a 1-2 click. They keep burying things in flyouts and you have to track commands down. These are not improvements in my book. By the time they get 2016 straightened out so that it is functional again it will be time for 2017 to come out and we may have to go thru this BS all over again. Frankly, I'm getting tired of it. SW just doesn't want to listen. they are dragging this out and making things worse. I'm sticking with 2015 for now. I believe its time to start looking at other tools. SW shoved the maintenance down our throats and gave us a terrible release as a thank you. Sorry folks, loosing faith.
I would be really happy if icons image (colors, size, etc.) is the only problem I have with SWX 2016.
I'm so tired of and pi$$ed about this New Coke!
Those who don't learn from the past are condemned to repeat it. SolidWorks, give us an option to have our FULL slate of classic icon colors. There are a lot of people ready to switch to Pepsi!
It is a weak attempt to pacify us users. I like that they changed the colors of the feature icons. Why half-ass it and stop there? Why not make the color scheme for part icons, assembly icons, and imported features a 'classic' option as well? I do not like the grey scale stuff. I will still be using 2015 as my primary software. This is still too hard for me to sit and look at for hours on end; my eyes get exhausted.
+1, retweet, like, pinit
Aside from the icons, 2016 still crashes frequently. I am the only one here still on 2015, and i laugh everytime i hear my office mate groan, cause i know what happened... if you can keep everyone on 2015, do it! the pros of 2016 do not out weigh the cons...
I've told the boss not to go to 2016 until they get the icon/UI issues fixed. So far, he's listened. What happens after I leave? Dunno. For the time being, we are sticking with 2015.
I did the same thing!
2016 has some nice features, like breadcrumbs, but between system instability and the UI issues it's madness to switch over at this time.
Has any one tried to turn-off bread crumbs to see if it helps the instability?
Agreed. As you mentioned there are several things I too really want to use in 2016, but the icon colors really are a big issue. Obviously this is a bigger issue for a lot of us than SWX wants to admit! The change of the artwork in the icons is not so much of an issue for me, but the color is enough to keep us from upgrading.
I was an early adopter of SWX. I got my hands on SWX95 from the VAR and kept changing the date on my computer to stay within the 30-day evaluation limit until my company bought ten seats of SWX96. We dumped Pro\Excruciating because SWX, even at that early stage, could do everything we needed except some very advanced stuff and it was so much easier to use and at a far better price for acquisition and training. AND SolidWorks listened to us! About the only thing that is the same now is that SWX has not changed their price and I still will never ever use PTC products. (I've even turned down jobs because they only used Pro.) Sadly, SolidWorks listening to us is apparently only lip service.
This icon issue was ill conceived in the first place, but was also loudly complained about in 2016Beta. Yet it still made it into production. Even being named the number one item in the SWW2016 Top Ten by a margin of almost two-to-one only got us a promise of a fix in SP3.0. And here we are at SP3.0 full release - greatly disappointed.
SWX2016 could be the only release I fully skip. Okay, it could be the only release that I fully skip SO FAR, for who knows what brilliant things await us that some non-user at SWX corporate will foist on us. What is that? Is that an evil laugh I hear?
