How to cancel out of failed mates?

I am in a fair sized assembly trying to mate some hardware and I have a reoccurring problem. I have found if I select a face and hold ctrl while selecting the second face or feature it allows me to create a mate. However, if the mate will cause problems the only options I have are to force the mate or not. I thought hitting Esc. would back me out of the mate but it does not. The only thing I have found is to go ahead and create the mate and then find the mate in the tree or the bread crumbs and delete it. Is there a quick way to cancel the mate? There sure should be.

I think it's kind of annoying that there is not a third choice in that "Do you want to force the Mate to Solve?" dialog box. How about a check box: "I now realize what a bone-headed mistake I just made, please forgive my ignorance and back me out of this command, with humble apologies..."

But, in the meantime, I just select "No" in the dialog box, and then just hit Ctrl+Z to back up a step. I don't know how well that would work if you're doing multiple mates, since, with my l'il ol' pea brain, all I can handle is one mate at a time....

If you are creating several mates and you only want the most recent failing mate to not create go into your selection box and right click and hit "Clear Selections" then hit the checkbox. This will make it so only the last mate isn't created. If the mate has already been created and you just want to remove the one you can go and right click on the mate in the mate interface window and select delete.

Yes that works when inside the mate editor. However I have found it faster if when not in any editor you select one item and then, while holding Ctrl, selecting the second item. When you let go of the Ctrl button mate options are displayed on the screen. You can select one of the options, but if the selection will cause a mating error for any reason I have not found any method to deselect the mate. You can only force the mate or not. Then you have to go to the tree or the bread crumbs (in '16) and delete the mate. I would like to know if there is a way to not make the mate at all.

The error message tells you that the mate cannot be achieved because...Blah!, Blah!, Blah!..., then it does it anyway, but leaves a red or yellow mate in the tree. So, in order to put right what the software knows is wrong and what you now also know is wrong, you have to come all the way out of the Mate dialogue, delete the offending (offensive?) mate and go all the way back

Why doesn't it tell you it can't do it, then simply Not Do It? That would seem eminently logical to me.

Another frustration that pro/E users don't have to suffer - Pro/E will not let you make a constraint that is insoluble. A great idea, in my opinion.

You darn people who have enough memory to remember mapped keys. Ctrl Z is undo right? With the way things are now that is probably the best answer.
