I have imported 40 meg STEP files before. It took 20 minutes or so and it was done. I have never attempted a file that big.
Have you tried this in SW2008?
Some possible workarounds:
Can you have the owner of the data break the assembly into smaller subassembly file sets? (This is of course assuming it is an assembly)
Open the file in another CAD system if you have one and see what happens. (It could be a corrupt file.)
From my experience, STEP is the best file format to start with when importing CATIA V5 data. There are services out there that can convert CATIA data to SolidWorks but you have to pay $$$.
are you importing it as a multi-body part or an assembly?
I convert large STEP files daily 100+ megSolidworks should makefast work of that one.Try selecting OPTIONS before you load thestep file and un-select perform full entity check & repairerrors and automatically run import diags.
thank you all for your help and advice !
I tried to translate the 100MB files using SW2007-sp5-64bit (no success)
With SW2008-sp0 (total succes) it took very little time on a 32bit system.
It seems that something good is going on in SW2008 !
best regards to all
the sw2010 does a better job of translating.
i have limited suppliers to send me max 30MB catia step, iges files.
only with a 64bit the job can be achieved.
