Well, we've gone through the many uses and Pros and Cons of
Virtual Parts. I think people are beginning to think about using
them in ways that Solidworks probably didn't intend. But what about
adding the ability to create Virtual Assemblies?
Basically its like a virtual part, no external assembly file. You could create sub-assemblies in your main assembly for which there is no part number or file. So why do this.....speed. Often we have assemblies with many parts but no sub-assemblies because Engineering and manufacturing want a flat BOM structure. We all know that thousands of parts with few sub assemblies in Solidworks kills performance. What we do now is create these sort of reference sub-assemblies. They don't have a part number and are just there to speed up SolidWorks. They consist of logical groupings of parts in the assembly but since we are often at the mercy of Mfg for structure, we have to build this sort of "flat" structure. Maintaining these sub-assy files inside the main assembly would be nice.....as long as we have the option to ignore the sub-assy for BOM purposes.
