Open Read-Only by default?

Hi,This viewer is a god-send for us, we use it for DWG files asAutodesk's own tools are, er, ropey!As a viewer our users assumethat this will open files for viewing, ie Read Only. Despite beingfairly obvious on the open dialogue box, the Open as read only isbeing missed and causing issues for people wanting to work on thefiles.Is there a way we can force this check box to be ticked bydefault? Can we use a command lin switch perhaps to open theprogram with the Read-only option selected automatically?Thanks inadvanceAlan

Hello Alan-

I don't know the answer to your specific question, can any Windows application be set to Open Read Only?

I just tried this, after creating the eDrawing, I selected its Properties and set it to Read Only. Then, when I Opened it with the eDrawings application, I got a warning Dialog box stating it was Read Only, then it Opened sucessfully as Read Only in the eDrawings application.

  we dont want to mark the files as read only, as they may need to beopened by other users for editing.I want to ALWAYS open anydrawings when using eDrawings, as read only. ie. "the open asread only" tickbox would ideally be always ticked by default.

    We do this with permissions on the Windows Directory/Folder structure.
    
    Only the engineers have Read/Write access to the engineering directories. Everyone else in the company has Read Only access. When they view files they open up automatically as Read Only.
    
    Not sure if that will work in your situation.

        All of our computers are set-up to run off the Domain, not Workgroups. So yes, it is controlled by our login id to the domain. We have multiple groups of users and the permissions for the folders are set-up for groups. Users are added to groups to have access to different directories on our servers.
        
        Hard to know what will work for Alan, as we do not have any idea what group of users he is talking about or how sophisticated their network set-up is.

        We run a Novell Network. In theory we could use permissions to workaround this, but in practise its not much use...We use the eDrawingviewer in a Citrix environment, currently the only viewer I'vefound that will handle multiple instances without problems.The sameuser who one day logs in from home over Citrix to VIEW a drawing,may then come to the office and open the drawing for editing. Sowithout multiple logins, permissions won't work for us.For now I'vetold them to make sure they tick Open read-only, but users forgetinstructions as soon as they are told!CheersAlan

        Another question here is why does edrawings need write access to the Solidworks file to begin with?

        You're right, I didn't realize that eDrawings could save the markup inside the SolidWorks file. Too bad SolidWorks can't view it.
        
        Maybe that wouldn't be a bad enhancement, the ability to markup drawings and models with SolidWorks. Just add a markup toolbar like eDrawings has.

        AutoCAD 2005 had something like this that worked with DWF mark-ups. It was pretty slick.
