I'm trying to mate these two 1 3/4" pipes as if they were welded, but I can't figure it out.

First, I mate the front planes of each piece, because that's the orientation I want them in (i.e. imagine two planar links). Then, I try to select the edges that should be mated (the diameter of each face's circle) but it won't let me choose those edges, saying, "unable to mate the selected entities." The best I can do is mate the two circular faces, which does not completely constrain the mate. What am I missing/ why can't I select those edges?
