Splitting a table based BOM

I am using SW 2006 sp 4.0

I have a very large table-type BOM, which will probably fill a single page. In the help file, it describes how to split a BOM , but according to the note on the page, this is for Excel based BOM's.

The only way I can think of to break up the BOM is to used another technique I saw mentioned on this forum; insert a second bom and then hide/show the rows as needed to simulate a split BOM.

I can do this, but I am concerned that it will tend to cause errors as other people edit the assembly. If a new item is added, it will show on all the parts of the BOM, because it will not be hidden. It should really only show up on the final section of the BOM.

Am I missing something? Any other ideas?
