Has anyone figured out how to make a material like on Nikon cameras? A high gloss speckle/spatter on top of a textured plastic.
Craig - Try the material within the Plastics section of the Visualize Cloud Library called Splattered.
you can also download it here: Visualize Cloud Library
Also, if you search the Visualize Cloud Library for "Splatter" you'll find the Normal Map and Specular map which you can apply to any material.

The ID is looking for a way to make the matte base, and just have the raised speckles glossy. He's tried the way you suggested and it's either all matte, or all glossy. Can you create this effect by doing a multi layer appearance?
there should be no need for a multi-layer (although you could do this with a multi-layer by adding significant complexity...a Specular map controls the relative reflectivity and should be perfect for this type of material. perhaps the Specular map isn't strong enough. In Specular maps, white means full reflectivity and black is no reflectivity. I've darkened the grey to be closer to black which should make a more obvious distinction between the shiny splatters and matte background. give it a try.
