I want to configure one part to either become a helical gear that is cut clockwise or counterclockwise. I cannot change one configuration to "clockwise" yet keep the other one from changing to "clockwise" or other way around.
The part that I am making is for educational purposes, yet I cannot figure this out myself.

This is a bug. Yes/No binary data cannot be configured the way dimensions are. This is a problem that needs to be fixed.

You know some of the binary data like suppress and unsuppress of features can be configured in design table.
For the feature options like direction of helix to be configurable, I think you need to create an Enhancement Request.
I don't agree it is a bug, but I do agree it should be an good Enhancement Request.
Here are some SPR related to your issue:

Please vote for this SPR if this feature is business critical to you.
For the moment, you'd need two helix features, one clockwise and one anticlockwise.
Then, use configurations to suppress one and show the other.

I solved this problem by creating alternative features that begin with the alternative spiral.
I switch between two groups of features that double one another, except that one is made for counterclockwise spiral cut, another one is for spiral cut.
The solution was the best solution possible, yet it was very time consuming.
I am going to make a video and publish it on youtube about this problem. I will get one million hits in a month and many people will see how absurd Solidworks can get.
I think like a computer programmer: Solidworks developers need to treat features like Object Oriented Programming functions.
There should be resources available to treat each feature like a table of variables and constants, connect it to others and write scripts if something is missing. I spent a long time programming C so it is strange to me how developers can't make this simple connection.
Why couldn't I just swap clockwise spiral for a copied-and-pasted counterclockwise spiral and connect 'child features' to it?
I cannot remap parent and child relationships.
Why can't I even copy and paste features?
I view features like a mix between virtual machining operations and computer operators.
I know that it sounds trippy.
A lot more work can be done to improve Solidworks.
