Modeling a detailed screen/mesh

I need to model a highly detailed screen. I wish to create an STL file for 3D printing, so it must have every detail. I want to create a screen with many small holes. The part size is 410mm x 210mm with 0.3MM holes that are approximately 0.5MM on center. These holes are tapered, they are not simple through holes. The problem is that the software seemingly cannot handle such a task. I've tried modeling this several ways:

 

1. The simplest approach, using a pattern fill. This causes the software to freeze and eventually crash.

2. Modeling the smallest repeating unit and using a linear pattern of bodies. This works only while the body count is relatively low. I've managed to use this technique with limited success, building the pattern, merging the bodies, then repeating. This technique ultimately fails well before I have completed the entire 410x210 pattern.

 

Any ideas? Is this simply not feasible using SolidWorks?
