How would you preserve thread information in CNC manufacturing models? I.e. Save As/Export to STP/Parasolid…
Anybody having experience or using SW PMI in this situation? Or do you have any other solution?
When the Models are brought in to CAM programs as dumb solids, they lose most of the created feature information (MBD) needed for machining.
These are the STEP203/214 Export capability of NX. So I assume STEP is capable of transferring PMI with the models.
SWx shows thread details in the feature tree and if it could be exported as PMI embedded in STEP file format, then the other CAM programs could recognize those features. This could be a solution to transfer MBD beyond the borders.
There is another method of to do Colour Coding the features and CAM programs could distinguish the differences. I’m not sure about its consistency. Has anyone adopted this method in SWx?
If i understand correctly, you want to export your SW files to STEP or Parasolid, and keep the PMI. Am i right?
If you want to do that, you should try CrossManager. It is a CAD file converter. It can convert SOLIDWORKS files to many formats, and it has the ability to keep PMI data.
Have you tried this? Would be interesting to get a temporary license to give it a try.
Hope SWx will come up with a good solution with their new PMI enhancements.
Yes, you can get a test license by registering on Datakit website. Just try it to see if it can do what you are waiting for!
Currently, Solidworks does not support exporting cosmetic threads created by the hole wizard. Please refer to SPR# 449119.
Hi Stephen, this is to find a method to preserve the info through the translation, probably with PMI. Siemens NX seems to be supporting STEP to embed thread info as PMI where our NX CAM is capable to read. I would like to know if SWx has tried this path.
