Is there an easier way than putting the imported part up side-by-side and taking measurements from it?
FeatureWorks is the way to go. But however there are a number of cases in which this fails because of
problems in the base geometry.
Also quite often most obvious choice of features to be built up are ignored and more roundabout features are created.
You have to be adept at hybrid modelling to do this.
If FeatureWorks does not give you the results that you are looking for or is simply unable to do it then you have a bit of work to do.
Align the body at the origin along the principal planes.
Then start with a sketch and build using the references of the base solid. Building features in the most logical and in a way that you best
deem fit. That's it.
You can then go back delete the references to the base solid. Fully constrain sketches using the commands in Solidworks and generally clean
up and tidy up.
Finally deleting the base solid geometry since you have now a parametric feature based model which is an exact copy.
No need to measure up .
