Since 2016 its impossible for me to drag and drop files from windows explorer into Solidworks. Neither parts or assemblies nor parts into a drawing, which was very helpfull in the past versions. Windows 10 x 64; SW 2016 SP 1.
are you using PDM ? maybe you have cleared your local cache so there are no files to open (only ghost icons).
If not, I would try to reinstall the SW explorer, maybe some .dll ware not registered.
This can happen if you start one of the applications as an admin user. This can be checked on the compatibility tab of the properties of an *.exe
Thanks so far.
Reinstalled SW. Didnt help.
On Windows 10 i cant start SW without admin rights. The Software simply doesnt start up.
Im not using PDM. I simply want to drag files from the file explorer windows provides into the solidworks application.
As Richard said drag-n-drop is not possible across applications with different rights. If you cannot start your SolidWorks as Administrator you need to run your File Explorer as Administrator (so they both have the same privileges)
But explorer.exe is started with the system and attaches to already running process when you start new explorer window. So you need to kill the process and restart this as administrator (just one time in a windows session).
You may try the following command line script. Create a new .bat file and place the following.
Run this script as an administrator. Now you should be able to drag-n-drop files to SolidWorks from the explorer.
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exestart explorer.exe
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
I think you can setup this script to auto-run every time you boot the PC or you probably can setup to run explorer.exe as admin every time without the script.
it works for me in Windows 7 with SolidWorks run as admin - I do not have Windows 10 to check but I think it is the same there.
Another solution is to disable the UAC - but this is not suggested.
Thanks again. Didnt help either. I do have admin rights on my pc. I got a admin account. Solidworks is started with admin rights aswell. So explorer and sw should have the same rights.
I was able to drag and drop from the Explorer by opening the actual SLDWORKS.exe located in C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Corp\SolidWorks\SLDWORKS.exe. I created a new shortcut on the desktop and deleted the original shortcut. I'm not sure how this worked but I was using an account with administrator privileges.
I hope this helps!
Hey man...realize I'm replying to an older post but I just wanted to say thank you. I was having the exact same problem which was f'ing up my 'routine'. Us engineers can't have our routines f'd with! Thanks again as this worked perfect.
Thank you for your post. My engineers were experiencing this same issue for months and I was not able to duplicate.
I dont use the default shortcuts on my desktop, so I always make my own to start SolidWorks. This makes perfect sense, and once I created new shortcuts on 3 of the engineers also running SolidWorks 2016 on Win10, they can now open files by drag-n-drop and double-click methods.
I have the same problem. I was using Windows 7 and everything was working fine. But after i upgraded my windows 7 to Windows 10, i can't open drawing files with dragging from explorer to Solidworks. I have to click folder icon in solidworks and need to find file's place. I tried solutions in this thread but didn't worked for me.
Same here. None of these solutions worked. I have admin account on my PC and tried all these things. Super frustrating, especially since this issue just cropped up out of nowhere.
