Custom Properties File change when creating new part from old to SW2016 upgrade....how to get old initial setup back?

Hello All,

I upgraded from SW2015 to SW2016 this morning after pushing off the upgrade for several months due to concerns of always having problems with customized settings, etc that come along with a software upgrade. I got most of my settings & toolbars back to the way (I think) they used to be. One is baffling me though. When I installed SW2015, I had it set so that any part that I would create from scratch would automatically have certain properties preset to show on screen and all I would have to do is fill the blanks (see first pic below). Now with the new version, it shows up blank and I have to hit the drop down arrow and populate the box with each property I normally use (see pics 2 and 3 below) How is it done so that they will automatically show again? I'm thinking that your templates need to be refreshed and made sure that all the information is the same from 2015 to 2016 - In the past I've seen that change when upgrading. In other words here I have all my templates on our server, not in my C drive. Then when a new version gets loaded, it should do a clean un-install and a clean install, then the directories or file locations change, not sure if that is your issue or not, but that is where I would start checking...

Just another reason why I made my own revision blocks - if that would happen here, I'd be looking for a cliff...... I'm sure you'll get it back up and running the way you want it..

You need to add those properties to the template file OR just use the older templates from 2015.

Once done, you would see them all there in new files.

The other thing to look into:

Is 2016 looking for your template in another folder, check the file locations

Hi guys,

I dropped the properties.txt file in both the SW2015 and SW2016 folders. The file has everything I need in it and everything works properly. The only thing is that the fields are not shown when I open the properties dialog box for the first time (it doesn't show anything so I have to hit the drop down arrow to add the file to the part). Annoying, my revision blocks are no longer showing either even though the file locations under options is pointing to the correct folder.

EDIT: I managed to get the revision block fixed. For some reason the install actually deleted some of my .prtdot & .drwdot files from the hard drive. That in turn was messing up the link for the revision block. Just not sure yet about the custom properties file. I'll keep on fiddling.....

After looking more closely at the file locations and default templates, this was the issue. You and Deepak were right on. Although my file locations folder was still pointing to the old SW2015 folder for the templates which was correct, the default template files were pointing to the standard part and drawing templates in the settings (see pics 1-3 below). I am good now and after setting the default template back to my original file template part_inch.prtdot , it now has all the fields showing when I create a new part from the part_inch template and open the file properties box for 1st time (last pic). Thanks guys.
