my solution was making the piston gear-shaped.

if i understand correctly, U R trying to make some kind of a metal food slicer (correct me if i'm wrong).
in that case, your solution is pretty good, cheap and easy to make.
U can also think of a different material for the piston, if metal is not nessecery.
i'm trying to make a multifunction gaelic press that can slice the garlic- some kind s a food slicer.
my problen is that the piston and the knives touchoing each other and that might break the knives with time...
I'm not clear about your question.
