Why is solidworks slow when connected to a network

A customer is experiencing a delay when trying to edit features of a part or when closing assemblies. The parts and assemblies are quite basic and shouldn't be causing this poor performance. They are using Workgroup PDM but the files have been checked out and are on the local drive however there is an improvement if the user disconnects his network cable and then tries to work on the part or assembly.

Would a file which is checked out from the vault still be trying to check references on the network when the part/assembly is closed? Nothing has been changed, the assembly has just been opened and then closed.

This does seem to be machine specific though and I have asked the user to have a colleague log onto his machine to test whether it is profile specific.

Any other suggestions?
