When in Part and 3D sketch tool/function is selected, I cannot find a way of exitting the tool, regardless of whether a 3D line is drawn or none. Of course CtrlZ will work but that is not a realistic option. I must be doing something wrong.

May be it's graphic error, can you try restarting SWX.
Anyways, as you use ctrl+z to get out of sketch without saving changes, you can also use ctrl+b (rebuild) to exit sketch with changes saved.
(I know this ain't a proper solution, but can help you survive by the time confirmation corner is enabled)
Following Deepak's suggestion, I opened a new part and tested 3D sketch and it worked fine. Yes the Conformation Corner was showing, and I only needed to select that or just click on the Sketch button once and it exited normally.
So the problem must be in the original part file.
I will experiment by deleting each feature (from the bottom of the tree) and adding a 3D sketch until I find where it might be, whatever "it" is. Will post when I have more info.
Just to complete the symptom details. I did try rebuild, the "pencil" exit and I even selecting where I thought the Confirmation button would be (thinking it might be a graphics problem since i have NVIDIA GPU version that is not on the SW tested list). Being unable to get out of 3D sketch prevented me from adding any new features to the tree.
I have SW2014
Here is what I found.
I opened the original file with the intention of removing features from the bottom of the tree. But before I started deleting a feature, I decided to check that the 3D problem was still there. It wasn't. The Confirmation Corner was displaying and yes it worked and all other symptoms were gone. It seems the cure was a computer shutdown and reboot.
I cannot recall anything abnormal during the >4 hour computer session before I started the 3D sketching, either in SW or other programs I was using.
But since the cause was most likely fumbling fingers, I guess I am to blame.
This sounds similar to some jury decisions!
Hello,
When you start any sketch, there is confirmation corner in the right top corner.
You can click on it to exit the sketch. The sketch icon saves changes and 'x' discards changes.
In case if you dont see this confirmation corner, check in the options, if its ticked
Go to Tools -> Optons
