Is it possible to switch off or change behavior of new midpoint selection feature of SW2016?
It`s very inconvenient for me when you want to select line but select midpoint instead.
Please see the post by Jim Wilkinson here: Update on UI changes for SOLIDWORKS 2016 SP04 and SOLIDWORKS 2017
In particular: "Midpoint selection has been modified to alleviate the problem of midpoints being selected instead of an intended edge or sketch entity. Midpoints now have a “wake up” delay before the midpoint is shown. If you intend to select a midpoint, simply pause the mouse over an edge or line for the midpoint to “wake up” and then select the midpoint."
Available now in SOLIDWORKS 2017 Beta builds, and will be available in SOLIDWORKS 2016 SP04.
I agree. This new "function" is more of a nuisance. I guess that's the kind of improvement we can expect when they can't be arsed to fix the real bugs and problem areas. Oh, and thank you guys for the new color scheme of the UI. I guess it's enough to constitute an annual release. Really innovative stuff, this will definitely speed up my workflow...
What doesn't speed up my workflow is the fact that I now have to zoom in on any small line segment just to be able to select IT and not the stupid midpoint. If I wanted to constrain a point to that edge I'd make a midpoint relation.
Thanks for the near nonexistent help about the new midpoint selection in your help section. It says nothing about how to turn it off. Is that because you figured nobody would ever want to miss out on this revolutionary new "improvement"? SW devs need to learn how to add options to disable redundant things like this.
Unless there is an option that I've missed. If so, please excuse my rambling and kindly direct me to it.
Not aware of any way to turn it off. I personally find it extremely useful, but would be good to have an option for those that don't like it.
Disable "Dynamic Highlight from graphic view".Tools->Options->System Options->Display/Selection.
Try turning off the "Instant 2D" feature.
Unfortunately you are not able to turn this feature off. So far 2016 has lots of new feature that really don't make sense to me, and they just happen to be things that really mess with work flow for me. sorry for the bad news my friend, new habits will form with time I suppose. Good luck.
I agree too. I'm struggling to select lines after 2016 installation.
Filter doesn't help me, the Sketch Segments filter still allows to catch midpoint.
I hope we can switch this "enhancement" off, we draw a lot of detailed sketches and everytime I need to place a mate I need to zoom in on the line piece to not-select the mid point, zoom out, zoom in on the other line I want to mate.
Sometimes, I wonder who designs stuff like this, they must be living on a different planet.
Vote this up:
"Let's select a line, oops, got the midpoint, hmmm wonder if I can drag the line with the mid point, nope (that would be a GOOD feature), oh well, just hit the esc key for the trillionth time".
I've not been able to reproduce this, works as expected. Check attached video and suggests if you're getting a different behavior?
Also anyone with similar issue can turn off the mid point snapping
Deepak, it not a snapping problem. Its a problem when you are just trying to select a line and accidently select the midpoint. In the video below imagine that I was trying to draw to parallel lines. After drawing the second line I need to select both lines and make them parallel. I select the first line, but when I click on the second line it picks the midpoint for me instead. In a real world example its a sketch with hundreds of lines and I'm not zoomed in enough to not accidently click the midpoint. Since Solidworks 99' when I was selecting a small line segment I would just error to picking the middle to avoid the endpoints. I can't do that anymore.
What screen recording utility did you use? I used the Windows 10 built in app:
How To: Use Windows 10's Screen Recording Utility | Windows 10 content from SuperSite for Windows
I like yours better.
OK, I now see the issue. Thanks for clarifications.
I use CamStudio - Free Screen Recording Software
I have noticed the same thing, and many of my users have also complained about it. It seems like the midpoint snap is much more sensitive than previous versions. I still want it, but just not so sensitive, I think.
I was going to suggest turning off the Selection Filter midpoint...
but it doesn't do anything. In fact the filters all seem to be ignored no matter which ones are turned on (2016 SP1.0).
I agree this is probably the most useless and irritating new 'feature'.
Please make a way to disable this. The department hates it.
This is the worst idea in the history of Solidworks
I disagree. Personally I find it very useful, but for those that don't like it it would be nice to have an option to disable it.
I agree. But in 13 years of using the SW, starting with version 99, there was great indignation I felt on innovation...
Every time I put the size of the line and get on the damn middle point, curse the one who invented it
If you type Instant 2D in the search bar on the top right in solid works 2016 you will find it. Just drag and drop onto the main toolbar.
Hope this helps.
I HATE IT!!!!
It's a good idea, but for some reason it is super sensitive and seems to default to midpoint if you are anywhere near.
For those of us that have been using this for decades, we are used to selecting on a line in the middle. It's a natural tendency. Now the midpoint is there to irritate us.
coming from nx, I find annoying not be able to snap every end, mid, intersection, center, surface point etc so what is the meaning of the whole SNAP point toolbar??
and why only the mid point is given so much effort?
Has there been a resolution to this "sketch midpoint sensitivity"??? It is also driving me crazy, a big nuisance and time-waster.
Yes, this is addressed in SOLIDWORKS 2016 SP04 which is currently in EV (early visibility) release. Midpoints will now have a “wake up” delay before the midpoint is shown. Starting with SP04, if you intend to select a midpoint, simply pause the mouse over an edge or line for the midpoint to “wake up” and then select the midpoint.
Thanks Tom & Jim -
We'll all wait for SW 2016 SP04 to be released and see how well it works.
Avoiding such troubles is the reason why I prefer to upgrade a year or two late.
