If I open it now, it comes up with a empty SLDPRT file.

Hello,
The link posted by John seems to say that only NX9 is supported.
You can use this plug-in: it enables to import NX files up to version 10.3 in SOLIDWORKS.

I just checked NX10 on both SW15 and SW16 and doesn't seem to work
NX 9 works with 15 &16
So the help file explanation may be wrong

Help files says Unigraphics and Unigraphics NX. Does that mean these are two different tools?software?

That makes sense.
The Original version was Unigraphics and later it changes to "Next Generation" and renamed to NX
So NX 9 is the latest that can open in SW
Looking at the help files, I think it is possible to open NX10 in SW 2015
