Is there an official statement from dassault on the support of PDMworkgroup and the support of this system??
Check it here: SOLIDWORKS 2016 SP1 Release Notes
SW2017 will be the last release to support WPDM
Thank you for pointing to an official announcement,
Will SolidWorks be releasing another product to fill the need of small-group data management?
I guess this means our plans to expand Workgroup functionality to the shop floor will need to be cancelled. No use investing time and money in functionality that will end in less than two years.
Enterprise PDM is beyond our budget, any suggestions? Windows file folders do not work because last-save-wins.
Yes, they already have released the replacement product in SolidWorks 2016. That is why they are dropping support with SolidWorks 2018.

2016 What's New in SOLIDWORKS - SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard
You will want to talk with your VAR to see if SolidWorks PDM Standard has the features you need and to develop a migration path from Workgroup.
The new vault is called PDM Standard and the Enterprise PDM vault has now been renamed to PDM Professional. PDM Standard is built using the same technology as PDM Professional. There are many limitations in PDM Standard compared to PDM Professional though. Some of the most notable limitations are the lack of API capability (removed), Tasks (the auto creation of exported PDF and STEP files is removed), Dispatch (removed), workflows (only one allowed) and number of states within the workflow (ten).
Applied CAD Solutions has developed an implementation solution for the transition from Workgroup PDM to the PDM Standard vault. The “ACS Ready Vault” program (currently in Beta and soon to be released) is an efficient method to extract existing SOLIDWORKS data form Workgroup and import it into the PDM Standard or PDM Professional vault.

One of the biggest changes is probably.....that we are going to Pay extra for it!
If you currently have SOLIDWORKS Pro or Premium, like Workgroup the PDM Standard vault will come with it for no extra cost.
NICE! Probably need to close this topic since PDM is somehow a Cashcow for VARS.
Somehow most of them always forget the mention there is free PDM with pro and Premium.
But when you do mention that there is pdmworkgroup they suddenly know that dassault, is stopping with support on it (even before the official announcement they knew it), but that there is an alternative for it for free that they don't know.
I think they are only making an ass of themself.
I just wanted to pass along that if you are moving forward with PDM Standard then you should definitely take a look at our product Flatter Files. Flatter Files is a very cost effective way to get a lot more value out of PDM Standard or PDM Professional. Check out this link for information regarding the integration with PDM Standard.
Here are some key missing features from Standard that Flatter Files provides:
- Automated PDF and other generic CAD creation
- Web access for an unlimited number of viewers
- Email notifications
- External viewer access
- Active Directory integration via SAML
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
