Simplify Bends (why can't I disable it?)

Hello,

Any ideas, other than making a Document template with predefined sheet metal form... I find the mentioned option to mess some shapes so bad that it would be best to disable it forever... but it seems to jump on on every new sheet metal model by default...

I know this is a very old post but I cant find anything else.

Can this default to be unticked in 2015?

  2017 and it still defaults to "make the flat different to the bent part". This is illogical. In addition a bug now means that when a part has two symmetric bends; one may be simplified and the other not, leaving you with a half-wrong non-symmetrical flat-pattern of a symmetrical formed part.

    In SW2018 sp2, you have this option:
    Can't remember if it's in SW2017.

        I think that has always been an option Fraser. Seems like I remember it as far back as 2005. Here is a screenshot from 2014.

        Thanks Dennis Bacon don't know how I missed that one.
        I just looked at my options now and it was checked so I guess I found already.
        I think from memory I had a lot of old parts from the 90's that had to be manually ticked.

      Thank you; you're right. This option is in 2017 too. (also available under flat-pattern in the feature manager design tree).
      However, checked or unchecked this won't (even in some simple parts) give the correct non-simplified flat-pattern,
      until 'Optimize geometry' (under cut-extrude, also in the feature tree) has been un-checked.
      
      [It sounds trivial, but it's part of a wide range of sheet-metal bugs, e.g.
      1. Holes diameters in the flat not the same as formed part.
      2. Unfold/fold can create a 0.0000087 deg error that takes down the mates.
      3. When meshing P-elements (in Simulate), you have to treat sheet as solid and in so doing, any forces applied to the sheet are no longer visible in the analysis, but are still calculated, giving a totally random result].

    Hi Keith,
    so what are you saying is that using the Simplify Bends is no good?
    My very recent experience is that if the Simplify Bends is Ticked ON and used , generated sheet metal is different from generated sheet metal if its done with UNFOLD feature. UNFOLD feature has no option to SIMPLIFY BENDS.
    This means that both flat patterns are totally different. If its DISABLED, both generated Flat Patterns are identical.
    In conclusion, the SIMPLIFY BENDS only creates a huge problems..

      Hi Fred, I agree with you there. Simplify Bends does cause problems. Also Unfold/Fold can ruin the geometry (SPR #931834). I now re-create broken-models without using Unfold/Fold, or Simplify bends. It takes time, but the pain then goes away. Good luck, Keith.

        I am new to Solid Works, Still using Solid Edge for production but am working on the switch. I figure it going to take about two years before production can actually switch to Solid Works.
        
        Unbend-Cut-Rebend is a critical part of my workflow because the closed corner options don't work for the designs we use. It's sounds like I need to turn off Simplify bends for all of my existing files and templates for future files.

        I've never had the joy of Solid Edge. Creo's my #1 system. Unbend-cut-rebend is normal there too, but best avoided if possible with Solidworks. Attached bug shows the small angular error (0.0000087deg) that unbend-bend can generate. Once this happens the assembly mates fall over. In this example you can check every pair of faces and only one pair shows the error; all others are parallel, or perpendicular. It's incredibly time consuming locating such a problem. That's not a Creo/Solidworks rant; they're both magnificent products. Best Regards, Keith.
